Shri Ajay Shankar, Secretary, DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry
Ajay Shankar

Joined the IAS in 1973.

Has an M.A. in Political Science from Allahabad University and an M.A. in Economics from Georgetown University of Washington D.C., USA. Has taught Political Science at Allahabad University for two years before joining Government.

He has rich and varied experience in the Central and State Governments in industrial promotion, the energy sector and urban management and development.

Before assuming responsibility of Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, he was Principal Adviser in the Planning Commission looking after the water, sanitation and environment and forest sectors as well as provision of rural infrastructure through the Bharat Nirman Programme.

As Joint Secretary/Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power he played a key role in preparation and enactment of the Electricity Act, 2003 and the rules and policies under the Act. He was also instrumental in promoting private sector participation in the Power Sector and was responsible for power sector reforms.

As CEO, Greater NOIDA Industrial Development Authority, he was responsible for development of one of the most attractive industrial townships.

He has been Secretary to the Lt. Governor of Delhi for over 5 years.

He has also been Commissioner, Kanpur and Chairman, Kanpur Development Authority.

 
Antonia Ward, Managing Editor, Design Council, UK
Dr. Antonia Ward

Antonia Ward is Managing Editor at the Design Council, where she oversees content on all Design Council policies and programmes for the website www.designcouncil.org.uk.

Before joining the Design Council in 2005, Antonia worked as a journalist and editor for the design and business press. She spent three years as editor of design magazine FX, and during that time chaired the judging of the prestigious FX International Interior Design Awards. Prior to that, Antonia was launch editor of New Design, the internationally acclaimed magazine for industrial and product designers. In an eight year journalism career she had contributed to the Financial Times, Blueprint, and Engineering magazine, among other publications, and has sat on the judging panels of a number of national and international design awards.

Antonia has a PhD in medieval literature and literary theory, and has taught undergraduates and postgraduates at the York, Liverpool and Keele Universities. She is a regular speaker at design industry events and conferences, and a commentator on sustainable design on the radio and in print.

 
Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Industries
Bhaskar Bhatt

Bhaskar Bhat, is a B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering) from IIT Madras (1976) and has completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad (1978). Most of his working experience has been in Sales & Marketing. He started work as a Management Trainee at Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co. Pvt. Ltd in 1978. After spending five years at Godrej, he joined the Tata Watch Project which was initiated at Tata Press Limited. Since 1983 he has been associated with the Tata Watch Project which later became Titan Watches Limited and is now Titan Industries Limited. At Titan, Bhaskar Bhat has handled Sales & Marketing, HR, International Business and general managerial assignments.

Bhaskar Bhat is a member of Board of Management Studies at the T.A.Pai Management Institute, Manipal and a member of the Governing Council in the SDM Institute of Management and Development, Mysore.

It was during his tenure that Titan became the ‘Changing face of time’ through the establishment of the largest retail chain in its category “The World of Titan”, Tanishq boutiques, Gold Plus stores and Eye Plus stores.

After Bhaskar Bhat took over the reins as Managing Director from 1st April 2002, the Company has embarked on a journey of becoming a billion dollar Corporation by 2010 with multiple businesses i.e. watches, jewellery, eyewear and precision engineering, marketing its products in over 34 countries.

Mr Bhaskar Bhat was conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIT Madras in April 2008 in Chennai.

 
Chandrashekhar Badve, Director, Lokus Design
C Badve
A Post Graduate Diploma in Product Design from NID Ahmedabad, Chandrashekhar brings with him a rich experience in various strategic roles and diverse functions like Macro Strategies, Systems Design, Strategic Design, Complexity Mapping & Decision Matrices, Applied Ergonomics & Research based products.

His wide experience is backed by his strong educational background as a Post Graduate in Diploma in Plastics Mold Design, from CIPET, Bhopal; A Diploma in Tool design and Manufacturing from MIT, Pune; and a Diploma in Production management, from AIIMS, Chennai. His contribution to the Design industry has been recognized and awarded in the form of Opus Design Award ’00, International Eye Wear Design competition, Patrick De’ Hass Committee’s special prize for Iris fashion eye wear for the blind, to name a few.

Co-founder and Director of Strategic Design & Marketing at Lokusdesign, he is responsible for the company’s fast-growing global operations, strategic consulting, key account and reputation management.
 
Professor Martin Darbyshire, President / Chief Executive Officer, Tangerine
Prof Martin Darbyshire

Martin is responsible for the strategic development of tangerine, creating new business opportunities and giving direction to design. His time is equally divided between internal and external facing roles.

Before founding tangerine in 1989, Martin joined Moggridge Associates and worked in San Francisco at ID TWO (now IDEO). For over twenty years Martin has had extensive hands-on experience of consumer insight research, innovation strategy, design and design strategy in all the major industry sectors.

Most notably Martin led the multi-disciplinary team that created both generations of the ‘Club World’ business class aircraft seating for British Airways. The World’s first fully flat bed in business class which, since its launch in 2000, has remained the profit engine of the airline.

Martin is also a Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts, Central Saint Martins; Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers & Corporate Friend of the Design Museum.

By the very nature of the business, Martin spends much of his time travelling to key areas in the Far East, the USA and Europe. Despite his increasing need to be “on the road” Martin still finds time to devote part of his energies to organisations outside tangerine.

 
Geert Jan Schellekens, Principal Designer, SABIC Innovative Plastics, Netherlands
Geert

Geert Schellekens holds the position of Principal Automotive and Industrial Designer at SABIC Innovative Plastics. He is of Dutch origin and has lived and worked in the Netherlands, UK, France and Germany.

At SABIC Innovative Plastics (formerly GE Plastics), Schellekens has led a vast multitude of consumer- and business related industrial design projects throughout Europe. Next to this, his unique expertise in automotive styling and design has resulted in many consultancy programs, conducted or lead by him for OEMs’ styling and design organizations.

Before joining GE in 1995, Schellekens designed -and lead 3D surface development of- several car and commercial vehicle models at Mercedes-Benz in Germany; he held general project responsibilities and was one of the key people that stood at the origin of the brand’s ‘family face’ as it was redefined in the nineties. He left his mark, among other things, on both generations of the CLK coupe, the W220 S-class and the O-350 luxury coach.

 
Jurgen Wolf, Managing Director, Hafele India
Jurgen Wolf

Born in the year 1957 at Dusseldorf, Germany, Mr. Jurgen Wolf holds a degree in Export Management from Germany.


He started off his career in 1979 with Thyssen Rheinstahl Technik, a German company providing turnkey solutions for manufacturing plants. His international career began in 1982 with his first foreign assignments as branch Manager Iraq, based in Baghdad.


Over two decades of a truly international career Mr. Jurgen Wolf was instrumental in developing various new markets in Asia, The Middle East region, North-America and Europe for the companies he was associated with.


Mr. Jurgen Wolf assumed the office of Managing Director- HAFELE INDIA in late 2001. In this capacity he is responsible for all India operations of HAFELE, including customer relationship, business development, sales & marketing and carries full P & L responsibilities. Mr. Jurgen Wolf is based in Mumbai, India and is employed on an open ended contract for this important assignment.

 
Manoj Kothari, CEO, Onio Design Pvt. Ltd.
Manoj Kothari

Manoj is a co-founder, director and principal strategist at Onio Design, a leading design company, based in Pune, India. Manoj, is a mechanical engineering graduate of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Bombay 1992 batch, and PG from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India, in Industrial Design.


Manoj orchestrates all innovation strategy consulting (for brands, products & inter-cultural interactions) and design research assignments at Onio. In a nearly decade old career in design, Manoj has lead hundreds of design assignments for Indian and international clients that range from small start-ups to mega-multinationals.

 
Ness Wadia, Chairman, FICCI - Maharashtra Council & Jt. MD, Bombay Dyeing
Ness Wadia

A leader, visionary and perfectionist - Ness Wadia is Joint Managing Director of The Bombay Dyeing & Manufacturing Co. Ltd., flagship Company of the Wadia Group. Whilst he is strategically involved in the Textiles & Polyester Divisions, he spearheads the newly incorporated businesses of Real Estate Development, Shopping Centres & Retail.

Ravi Chhatpar, Strategy Director, Frog Design, Shanghai Studio
Ravi

Ravi Chhatpar is the Strategy Director in frog design’s Shanghai studio.

His primary focus is in growth and innovation strategy, where he brings strategic thinking to frog’s multinational clients who are looking for success in various global markets.

At frog his experience spans a range of business strategy lead roles for clients across industries. His frog client portfolio includes broad experience with SK Telecom, Samsung, GE, Microsoft, AT&T, BBC, Virgin Mobile, ETS, Cox, and Prudential. His areas of expertise include mobile, TV and media, web, consumer electronics, and education.

He has also authored publications for the Harvard Business Review and the Design Management Institute, lectured and taught courses at business schools (CEIBS, NYU Stern), and is an avid participant in the conference circuit around topics related to innovation and design management.

Before frog, Ravi spent almost 3 years in Tokyo building an e-business strategy and delivery capability for NEC. He has also worked as a specialist in new venture strategy and private equity, and as a management consultant.

Ravi has an AB in Biology and Economics from Harvard University.

 
Prof. Ravi Poovaih, Head- IDC, IIT Bombay
Ravi P

Professor Ravi Poovaiah is senior faculty member at the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. He has backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering (IIT Madras), Product Design (IIT Bombay) and Graphic Arts Education (Rhode Island School of Design, RISD, Providence, USA).

His pedagogic interests are in Product Design, Visual Design, New Media Design and Interaction Design and his research interests are in areas related to Visual Language, Information Visualisation, Way Finding Systems, Interaction Devices, Collaborative Learning Environments and Designing for Children.

Professor Poovaiah has worked on projects with major industry leaders such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Google India, Motorola India, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Bharat Electronics Limited, Siemens India, among others.
